If at first you don't succeed...You know the drill

« on: July 07, 2011, 04:39:22 PM »

Question for Jan or whoever's in charge.  We've had a very talented 13 year old writer who has started attending the Tuesday Chat Session.  One of our class accidentally (literally) set up a Windows Live group, which we've been developing for critiquing each others work.

Emma is very interested in writing, and we've been really impressed with the quality of her work.  She's good and she's listening to suggestions we make.

Right now, the only systematic writing education she's exposed to is in school where her English teacher is also impressed (I've been talking with her mother via email).

The question is can Emma register to participate in Writer's Retreat?  as more than a guest I mean?  We'd all like her to be.

Jan would have to confirm, but as far as I know that is okay. I stand to be corrected but I'm sure there's another 13 year old on here. Smiley

Yes, there is at least one person under the age of 18 on here (I think there might be two or three, but one is - well, was - 13 when she started the course, and on the WR).

I think Sara Kay is the one who is about 13or so.

Papa Moon, just remember that we sometimes ( often?) discuss things here that...in my opinion, anyway...a kid that young should not be reading or taking part in.  So if Jan okays her, you might want to suggest that her mother monitors her when she's on here.  I think someone said that Sara Kay's mother does that. While there is seldom if ever "cuss" words used here or anything really shocking, it's not up to the adults to monitor their discussions for the sake of the kids.

However, I think only past and present students of ICL can register as members...Jan can confirm this or not, as the case may be.

I believe that the WR is open to any who wish to join, regardless of being a student, having been a student, or never having been a student.

Sara Kay is an adult; I think you're probably thinking of Erin Kay, who is now 14. But you make a very good point about this being a board primarily for adults and that it might be a good idea for Emma's mom to monitor.

It's my understanding, too, that anyone may join, without any connection with ICL.

I was thinking in terms of the "Members Only" section.  Everybody can join, but only members can read that section, and it's my understanding ( which may be way off base) that "members" means past and present ICL students.

If "members" simply means that anyone can become a "member" by going through a user name and password, that changes a lot for me.  I've posted things in that section that I don't care to share with "just anyone," and if "just anyone" can go there, by virtue of a password, I will be far more careful in the future about what I post.

Nope, I'm pretty sure "members" means member of the Writers' Retreat--anyone who has joined and is not just coming here as a guest. They don't have to be a former or present ICL student; they're a member of this forum. I could be wrong (it's happened before...  Grin ) but I'm 99% sure.

The WR is open to anyone, whether student past or present, or people who haven't done any studies through the ICL. So, as anyone can join, anyone can access the Members only section. The Members only section is for registered members, guests don't even see it. The Hush Hush section is for people who have posted 250 and more posts. But we do need to be careful what we post.

There's a hush hush section? (Yes, I wrote that only so I could have 243 posts, instead of 242. 250, here I come!)

Age is not a limiting factor here. After all, someone could register and never tell us his/her age so why penalize someone for being up front about it? You do not have to be a student or have been a student. Anyone interested in writing is welcome here. Folks not connected with ICL might be a little confused by some threads but it's not like we have a secret handshake or something. The Registered User board is for anyone registered. It mostly exists to keep posts out of Google. The Hush-hush board is for folks who have participated enough that everyone feels comfortable with him/her -- so it becomes open after a substantial number of posts. But anyone is welcome to register, to participate and eventually to be part of the evil cabal...um...I mean hush-hush section.

Oh, I meant to add, restrictions here are based only on behavior. We'll remove folks for being spammers, fighting, inciting riots, plotting the overthrow of the zombie bunny government, stuff like that.
