I have a outlandish idea to bring to the table. I want to write a fantasy story about a teenage boy who is sixteen otr seventeen that can breath under water. He is definately no merman thats for sure. I don't really have a clear outline just ideas. I want his name to be Jaiden and I want him to fall in love with teenage girl who's name is yet to be determined. I may even have him save the girl at some point. There needs to be problems to solve and lots of mystery and drama. I want him to be depicted as handsome and strong. Am I going to far with this idea? Does anyone have any ideas to help me create a decent outline? I would love your input. Keep Writing, Legacy

I think that's a cool idea, and I'm wondering if you want it to be almost like The Little Mermaid, but switched around? I know you said you don't want him to be a merman, but I'm wondering how/why he breathes underwater...hm...He doesn't live underwater?

Also, are you going for short story, or novel?

Maybe there's lots of people like him, and your teen girl and her people are not like him but they fall in love anyway(maybe 'Romeo and Juliet' style)...see the story ideas forming here?  Grin

Got lots of idea bits and pieces runnin through the noggin...

OctoberTrag.  I think I do want him to be part fish but with normal legs like a regular human. I kind of want it to be a novel in the future but maybe I could make it a short story possibly thanks for the input, Legacy

Gee, this is a story brimming with so many ideas. Right now my mind is in a fog. I just PM'd Chippy my MWO and I'm whipping out the ten words for 'Tober's Ten Words to Start #3. What if he doesn't really breathe under water, but he's like a whale where he can hold massive amounts of air in his chest and stay under water for a long time that way?

Legacy, in the Percy Jackson series, the MC (Percy) can breathe underwater because his father is Poseidon. You may want to read one of the books. I think they're great.

I have an outline somewhere around where a family of fairies live on a farm with a pond. As each of the fairy children go throught puberty they "graduate" into being an adult fairy by developing a certain gift/ability. The MC's gift is that she can swim in the pond for unlimited period of time.

He could be like spiderman or superman, where he eats or drinks something that gives him special powers.

Hey Legacy,
i have a race of water people in one of my novels too. It's tough to think about huh?

What if the girl can't swim, and not only that, she TERRIFIED of going near water (near drowning experience, death of a family member, etc). This sucks of course, because Jaiden's second (or first) home is being in the water.

Or what a bout this twist: you say he's strong, and can breathe under water. What if the girl (still terrified of water) has to save him in the water for some reason? She then learns that she has the same gift as Jaiden (which had been buried by an evil spell/curse?)(or maybe a more powerful or different type of gift) and he learns that what caused him to almost die was a backstabbing friend/family member that wanted his gift (for some larger plan). They find that using their gifts together is the only way to defeat ---

How's that?

Nice Shauna!

Well, maybe this is a special kind of "supe" that can eat or drink something to get powers...but has to keep eating or drinking this item to get the power....it could be hard to come by.

Comic book geek, really Hardt?

These are all helpful hints thankyou everyone. I still have to make some major decisions about this story but I'm glad you all like my idea. I think I want Jaiden to be born with gills but still take the shape of a normal human being. Still working on it! Keep writing, Legacy

Give him gill slits, like a shark has, in the back of his throat.  As long as he swims with his mouth open, and water is constantly flowing over his gills, he should be fine!  It's kind of hard for sharks to breathe if they stop swimming though...so maybe not.

I once made a sketch of a merman, trying to determine (scientifically  Wink ) what he would need to be able to survive above and below the water.  It was so fun. I gave him nares (which a shark uses to smell), gill slits (he has lungs too though, for when he's above the water), and obvious stuff like webbed fingers.  I never quite figured out what he would eat though. Undecided lol. I named him Reuben! Cheesy

I love fantasy, and some of my favorite books are contemporary fantasy, so I really love your ideas, legacy! Smiley
