"We can haz fun eben when we iz rong."

« on: January 22, 2010, 05:11:05 PM »

I just put these lists together for my face-to-face crit group, and thought I'd post them here, too:

MGs that appeal to boys:

(caveat: not all the MCs are what you'd call good role models; you may want to skim these before recommending them to boys or parents!)

Eoin Colfer – the ARTEMIS FOWL series* (long)
Tony DiTerlizzi & Holly Black – THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES series*; BEYOND THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES series*
Jack Gantos – the JOEY PIGZA series
Neil Gaiman – THE GRAVEYARD BOOK*
Watt Key – ALABAMA MOON
Gary Paulsen – HATCHET and others
Rick Riordan – the PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS series* – THE LIGHTNING THIEF, etc.
Angie Sage – the SEPTIMUS HEAP series* - MAGYK; FLYTE; etc. (long)

* fantasy

Literary MGs:

("literary" meaning, in this case, not chick-litty, not commercial series like Babysitters' Club; not primarily action-adventure books; well-written IMHO)

Jeanne Birdall – THE PENDERWICKS
Ellen Booraem – THE UNNAMEABLES* (says ages 10 & up)
Leslie Connor – WAITING FOR NORMAL
Sharon Creech – anything, including WALK TWO MOONS; THE WANDERER
Kate DiCamillo - BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE and others
Katherine Fitzmaurice – THE YEAR THE SWALLOWS CAME EARLY
Neil Gaiman – THE GRAVEYARD BOOK*
Patricia Reilly Giff – ALL THE WAY HOME; PICTURES OF HOLLIS WOODS; LILY'S CROSSING and others (but she also wrote many, many not-so-literary easy readers)
Kevin Henkes – OLIVE'S OCEAN
Cynthia Kadohata – KIRA-KIRA**
Lois Lowry – THE GIVER*; THE MESSENGER*; GATHERING BLUE*; GOSSAMER* (my current favorite); NUMBER THE STARS**
Ann M. Martin – A CORNER OF THE UNIVERSE
Susan Patron – THE HIGHER POWER OF LUCKY
Richard Peck – A LONG WAY FROM CHICAGO**; A YEAR DOWN UNDER**
Sara Weeks – SO B. IT; JUMPING THE SCRATCH
Jacqueline Woodson – FEATHERS (**as I recall)
Jane Yolen – THE DEVIL'S ARITHMETIC** and others

* fantasy
** historical fiction

PLEASE ADD YOUR OWN FAVORITES, AND FEEL FREE TO MAKE NEW CATEGORIES, TOO!

"Wow."

Cat reaches down and picks up her eyeballs and puts them back into her face.

"Look at all the pretty books. I love the Penderwicks, and ooh, ooh, there's an old favourite...The Wanderer, by Sharon Creech. That's it, I'm gonna have to assemble all my books and list 'em here. Thank you Kate, for being so wonderful."

Kate, I would deffinitly have to had 'My Louisiana Sky' written by Kimberly Willis Holt to your list of Literary MG's.

This book was required reading for me back in elementry/middle school. I was not looking forward to reading it at the time (judged a book by it's cover) but it made a lasting impression on me and found it a to be a very touching story.

I'd have to add ROLL OF THUNDER HEAR MY CRY to the historical fiction list (author Mildred D Taylor). It was required reading in late elementary. I havent' read it in years, but its one of the first books (along with WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS by Wilson Rawls) that I can remember actually made me cry.

Trenton Lee Stewart's The Mysterious Benedict Society (series) is great--mystery/adventure and appeals to boys and girls.

My favorite growing up was "The Bears of Blue River." Sorry, I don't remember the author. It was historical fiction set in the pioneer times of Indiana. Our fourth grade teacher read it to us.

I've reread it several times since then. It reads as well for adults as for kids. I think that's what I like about it as much as the story inself.

My fav. M.G Novel is evermore. I like new young adult novels because I want to get an idea of what kids like to read currently. I think young adults usually read new books but I could be wrong, there are those timeless books like Narnia. I love Narnia timeless I tell you!

Kelly, The Mysterious Benedict Society is in my stack of to-be-reads. (I keep putting it back down 'cause it's so thick...  Grin )

Legacy, wouldn't Evermore be YA rather than MG? Oh, say, why don't you start a thread here for favorite YA novels? We've got this one for MG, and one for adult, but we need one for YA!

Your right Colorodo cat sorry I should of realized that Evermore wasn't really M.G I guesse I see like young readers who are like 11-18 reading this novel. But I think I will start a YA thread my list may not be as long as all you guys but everyone else can add to it I guesse.I am still learning what book is for what age bracket child/MG/YA. Still learning... everyday..
