I am going to submit a story that is 936 words. The magazine I want to submit to asks for 1,000-1,500 words. My question is this. Will they just throw my story out without looking at it? Would it be better for me to add some to get it to 1,000?

I know they discard things that are over word count automatically.  If it gives a minumum amout of words I would try to expand the story to meet the guides.  But then not enough words is not a problem I have had, lol.

KOP,

That is a difficult question to answer. As Sandy said magazines will discard submissions over the word count but I never hear much about submissions under word count. I've always had the problem of having to trim down my submissions  :Smiley.

I'd say give it a try on expanding your story a little more, after all it's just 64 words and you'll be in the perfect range. Smiley

Good luck on you submission.

KOP,

I think you would be fine submitting it as is, because many magazines like shorter stories to balance out the many longer ones they receive. On the top of the ms you can state "~940 words." On the other hand, some mags are sticklers for word count, and not knowing who you're submitting to, I don't know if that mag is or not.

If you are able to add a few more words to the story, that would work, too. Lucky you - many of us have the opposite problem and need to cut words all the time to make the correct word count.  Cool

Blessings,

I agree less is more. But if there is any way you can bring it into the 1000 count it would be ideal!
