I have read through the help section and trired to figure this out for myself but, alas, I need some help.  At the very bottom are two thumbtack icons, one says locked topic and one says sticky topic.   Ok, locked-why is a topic locked and who gets locked out?  And what is a sticky topic?  Just curious...

Let me see if I can answer this for you....

When a topic is "locked", no one else can contribute to it; It's just for viewing, and anyone can view it.
A topic may be locked because it's just a special announcement from Jan and Chippy, or a list of books to read.

A sticky topic--I believe--is where it can be 'tacked' to the head of the list...Take for instance, all the threads that have been tacked to the top in the MWO section or General Discussion section.
When it's tacked it stays there at the top so we don't lose track of it.

Most announcements from the moderators are both locked and tacked.

Does that help? Smiley
And did I get those right? Cheesy

Londy that is exactly what they are.

The Blank Page Cafe thread is locked too. Only the current BPC thread can be added to.

And, yes, the stickied threads are those at the top of the list in each index. They are the ones that need to be or could be referred to often and you don't want them disappearing down the page. Smiley

Pongo and Ursala have another silly question:

If the plural of "wolf" is "wolves,"

and

if the plural of "calf" is "calves,"

then why isn't the plural of "giraffe" -- "giravves?"

No, tha'sokay.  You don't need to respond.  It IS pretty profound, though, isn't it?

Possibly because 'giraffe' has 2 ff's and an e at the end?   Huh

But along those lines,

if the plural of mouse is mice

why isn't the plural of moose  meese?

*Shauna chuckles, making her choke a bit on the coffee she was just swallowing, and smiles at Kate's question.*

Mongoose is not an english word and has no association with goose/geese.

mon·goose? ?/?m???gus, ?m?n-/  Show Spelled[mong-goos, mon-]  Show IPA
–noun,plural-goos·es.
1.a slender, ferretlike carnivore, Herpestes edwardsi, of India, that feeds on rodents, birds, and eggs, noted esp. for its ability to kill cobras and other venomous snakes.
2.any of several other animals of this genus or related general.
