OK, I'm officially confused. I registered today for the Writing Children's Books course. It's an advanced course and I thought it was the same as the Novel course. However, the woman on the phone told me they are two different courses. Is the Novel course the one for adults? Is that the difference, or is there another course beyond the children's book one I just enrolled in?

Lots of folks "call" it the "novel course" because they're writing novels. But you can write chapter books or picture books. I think the one the Institute calls the "novel course" is for the adult side because you can ONLY write novels for that one.

Hi Kelly,

I don't have access to my course book right now, but I believe Jan is right. You can work on a middle grade or ya novel in the course, but they don't call it the novel course because you could choose to do picture or chapter books instead.

Gee, Kelly, now I'm confused!  When I enrolled in the first advanced course, it was entitled "Writing and Selling Children's Books."  In it, I had the choice of writing Picture Books, early readers, short chapter books, middle grade and young adult novels.  Fiction or non-fiction.  I chose a fiction middle grade/YA novel, 18 chapters and a little over 62, 000 words.

There is also an advanced course for magazine stories/articles.  I think the adult novel course is taught by Long Ridge Writers.  But I don't know what other advanced novel course there is.  I just enrolled in the children's advanced novel course for the second time, and received the first part of the manual which is the same as the one I had for the last course.

So now I am also confused.

Thank you Jan and Angelia. That makes sense to me now. Mikki, I'm sorry I've got you confused now! If you are taking the children's advance book course for the second time, the course work is still the same (and so is the manual). But you can work on a different book. Does that help you?

Yeah, I think I'm unconfused...at the moment.  I just was wondering why you would have been told that there are two novel courses, without explaining that one was the Long Ridge one.  Oh well.  They sent me the first part of the manual by mistake.  I had already told them that I had the manual and all the other books, so they lowered my tuition because they didn't need to send the books a second time.  I was going to send the 2nd manual back but they said just keep it...at least I won't get the rest of it.

I'm working on an historical fiction novel with an instructor who has published historical fiction, so I'm excited to have started with her.

Mikki, I don't know why they didn't explain that it was the Long Ridge one. And what confuses me more was that the woman I spoke with looked up instructors who wrote middle grade fantasy. Now I guess they could have and still teach the adult course, but why would I have asked for MG fantasy if I was taking the adult course? It doesn't make sense to me. Oh well. The other thing I was disappointed by was that I already have one of the books, and I asked to have my tuition lowered by the amount of the book, but the woman said I could only get a voucher for that amount to be used at the bookstore. I know other people (including you, Mikki) who had the tuition altered, so why couldn't I? I expect the student services people to know what the protocol for these situations should be, but apparently, they've got nothing on Jan!

Possibly you had someone new? You could always call back.

Kelly, I just enrolled in the Adult writing course and I told them I already had one of the books. They also told me I would get a voucher to use in the book store. Maybe they have changed their policy on that? It wouldn't hurt call again and ask though.

I feel better now, Mariah. Maybe too many people were falling into the category of not needing materials and ICL was forced to change their policy. I'm sure I'll find a book in the bookstore that I'll want, so it's not that big of a deal. I was just curious if, like Angelia said, I got someone new who wasn't aware of all the policies. Thanks for the comments.

Well, plus Mikki's situation is a little different--she's retaking the same course, so she has the manual and all of the books. Maybe if you retake a course, they do lower your tuition because you don't need any of the stuff, whereas if you just have one or two of the books (not the manual), you get a bookstore credit?

Ah, Kate, the voice of reason. That makes perfect sense. Thanks for putting things in perspective.
