Ok, all, I have to decide what to do for my last assignment in the Mag Course. I have done mostly nonfiction. So, I don't know if I should write something fiction, which I already have a story written that would work with some touch ups. Or do an How-To article of a craft or recipe, which I haven't tried yet.

Please vote, and help me decide. Thanks.

If you haven't done much fiction in the course, it might be a good time to try a bit so you get the full benefit of input about both types of writing.

Jan, that is what I was thinking. But, I also haven't done the How-Tos, so it is kinda toss up. Taking input!

My vote is in.  I was biased.  You'll need to guess what I mean by that.  No clues.  Wink

I voted, becca, but you could do a poem.
I'm sure that can't be a novel thought, though. Hey, I'm on my last assignment as well, and I'm doing a poem.

Really, is your instructor cool with that? The course doesn't actually cover poetry though I've let students turn it in before. But know that if you're instructor doesn't clear it...she/he might send it on back.

I don't really think I need any serious help with poetry, I don't want to waste a whole assignment on something I probably wouldn't learn much from. As Jan pointed out, it isn't really in the manual. I want to challenge myself and learn as much as possible with my course.

Jan, can I send it two things? Or is that frowned on?

It's frowned on unless you work it out with your instructor. Sometimes folks have asked me -- for the next assignment can I include a cover letter for "previous story" along with the assignment? And I pretty much always say yes and I'm happy to do it because I was asked first. But when folks just HAPPEN to send two things without talking to me, I do get the frowny face. The Institute says to just pick one and ignore the other but I hate to do that...so I just end up  doing both and feeling mildly taken advantage of since I wasn't asked first. The manual never says to send extra stuff, so if you want to send extra stuff -- ask the instructor first. Really.

I didn't want to take advantage of my instructor. She is really nice, and she would prolly work with both, but I figure she is only getting paid for one, and I wouldn't like it if someone did that to me. I try to be considerate. I will have to pick one.

Thanks for telling me that, Jan!

Do you think they will ever have a poetry course at ICL? Because there is a big market for it, if you know where to look, and it is one of the easiest ways to get into print the first time.
