If an instructor feels a student is really hitting a wall and not able to move forward in the situation of distance learning, we are supposed to call the Institute so that we don't keep putting the student in a situation to fail. That really doesn't happen very often. Mostly students who are slamming into the wall over and over figure out they don't like distance learning and quit. That DOESN'T mean they can't learn, just that the distance learning system might not be right for them.

So we're not supposed to graduate a student if they don't produce a submittable manuscript and don't advance in the course, but we're also not supposed to let the poor student get to the end to learn that. It's not fair. Now, a person might produce a submittable manuscript and thus "pass/graduate" but still not be advancing well in the distance learning model -- for a student like that, they don't get recommended.

But that's really pretty rare. Honestly, the folks here are coherent and clear and seem to be able to learn from text (from what we say to each other here) so I would be surprised if an instructor found any of you was really hitting the wall too much to move to the next level. I can only speak for my own students though...I can say that none of MY students who post to this board at this time are in any danger of not being recommended  Grin

Usually you can tell even in message board posts which people just plain have trouble communicating in print and understanding what is said to them in printed communication.

Thanks Jan for that insight!  Cheesy I'd like to know do you guys ever enroll anymore younger than a certain age? Cause on the apitutude test they have a huge variety of ages starting with 3 I think. So do you guys ever get anyone that young? Is there an age limit at the Institute? Are there instructors for children that young if they do get enrolled?

By special permission we do have some younger teens, but I don't think they have students younger than that. And I think the student has to be really good and the parents have to agree that the student can handle the stress of a course on top of the normal school stuff every kid has.

Sharonda, ICL accepts anyone 14 and older if they pass the aptitute test. When I first sent in my aptitute test I was 13. I recieved a polite letter informing me that they could not take me on as a student until I was 14 with parent consent. They worry that the extra study on top of high school is too much for most students. They closed my requesting that I re-apply the following year when I turn 14 if I was still interested. I posted that letter on my wall and re-applied as soon as I turned 14.

Nearly 5yrs later and I'm half way through the advanced mag course. Smiley

But if a student has done well in the basic course, shown steady growth, seemed to grasp what I've told her/him in letters, then I'll recommend for the book course or for both courses. So if you haven't felt like this basic course is a lot like beating your head against a wall. And if you feel like you've understood your instructor's letters. And if you have a strong desire to write books...odds are good you'll be recommended.

Thanks, Jan. I shall keep that in mind. My instructor usually has positive things to say about my work and improvement, so I'm still going to keep my fingers crossed. ^.^

I don't think I'm a bad writer. I'm just worrying...

But, maybe I don't really have much to worry about xD

Donna, don't worry about worrying too much! I did the same exact thing! I worried my butt off during the course...for what I dont know! My instructor never really had a bad thing to say....I just got nervous for no apparent reason. It'd take me like an hour to open the letters haha! I was a wreck! But you just relax! I am postive your instructor will only have good things to say about you and your work. Smiley

And btw, AlaskanRC, I was 15 when I was accepted into the course and when I begun it as well. Thought I'd mention that since I neglected to do it before Wink

I randomly stumbled onto this thread again. xD
Just wanted to update everyone: I was accepted into the advanced class when I graduated, but at the moment, I don't have the money to be able to take it. However, I do plan on taking it as soon as I'm able.  Smiley

Congrats Donna. It's nice to know the outcome.  Grin

I found this thread interesting as I am working on my last assignment, and have been wondering what it takes to get recommended for the advanced courses. Now I can't wait to see what my instructor says, but I have to finish my assignment first  Cheesy
