Hey guys, I outlined three article/story ideas for assignment 8 while getting over my writer's block. Now that they're sent back, I understand I have to write a saleable piece from one of those outlines.
My instructor told me to go ahead and choose which one I liked best. I've got a brand new idea that I've already written up since and even sent out. Can I use that new idea for my 9th assignment?
Thanks for your input, John

Well, if you've already written it and sent it out, it sounds as if you don't particularly need your instructor's insight or advice on that one, so it seems to me it would be kind of a waste (of your ICL experience and $) to use it for assignment 9.

Why not choose whichever one of the three outlines you find the most challenging, so you can get the benefit of your instructor's help on it?

That's my thought, anyhow.

John, as far as I can remember in those two assignments, you do the outlines for assignment 8, and then a story from the outlines for assignment nine.  As Kate said, choose the one that will be the most challenging to you.

Good luck. Smiley

I just completed 9 and am now working on a rewrite of nine so I guess I am not finished after all lol but I agree with the ones above, it would be best to work on one of the outlines you have done for assignment 8 and turn it in for 9 which is what the lesson ask for. But that is just my oppinion on the situation.  By doing the lesson and working it up from one of the outlines you have already done, it helps you get the most out of your assignment.

John,

The instructions in lesson 8 sound like preparation for working from assignment.  If you get an assignment from a magazine, they are going to want you to work from the agreed-upon prospectus.
The same holds true in this instance, I think.  The lesson let you put the idea out there (query); now, you are being tested (in a form of speaking) to see if you can hold to the original idea.  In truth, its allowing you to set a certain degree of your own boundaries.

Of course, I could be interpreting this lesson incorrectly, but that's the way I see it.  Writing has to have guidelines and this is just one of the ways of teaching us to stay within those guidelines so we can grow in our craft, don't you think?

I think you're right, especially as practice for when the magazines request pieces, and I'm going to go ahead and follow my guidelines. Thanks for the advice here! Great stuff.

Good on ya', John.  I'm sure every lesson has a purpose.  Good luck on your article.   Smiley
