I just mailed off assignment 9 and it suddenly struck me I'm almost done with the course. Only 1 more assignment! I so enjoyed having my own personal mentor. I feel like I'll be lost without guidance, isn't that strange? I have all the tools but...but..I guess it's time for the little birdie to spread her wings and leave the nest! Either that or sign up for another course!!!

I'm SURE I'll feel the same way when I get to that point.  Have you considered taking an advanced course?

I know how you feel when I sent off my final assignment for my Long Ridge novel course I wanted to cry. My teacher had helped me so much with it and I hated the idea of continuing without her.  Cry Cry Cry

But I have. Whether it will turn out as well as she said she thought it would is still up for debate.  :Smiley

Or you can be like so many of us and make assignments 10A and 10B last for, oh, months and months!  Grin

I felt the same way, too.

While it may be sad to leave, think of it as an adventure. You have all the tools you need now and you still have these boads. Enjoy the journey. Smiley

Hi Karen,

I'm jumping in a little late here, since it's already April 5th, but thought I would add my 2 cents' worth.  I felt the same way about finishing the first ICL course, so as soon as I received my diploma, I enrolled in the advanced course for novels.  This course also covers short chapter books and non-fiction books, so with one course you have 3 ways to go.  There is also the advanced course for magazine stories and articles.

I feel so much better prepared, as well as more confident,  for having taken this advanced course, which I'm now almost through with.  I've had a good instructor, and have learned a lot from him, just as I did with my instructor from the first course.

So you might want to consider enrolling in either one of the advanced courses when you've finished the first one.

Can anyone give examples of the kinds of things you've learned in your advanced course? I'm assuming the cost is comparable, or maybe a bit more costly. I'm struggling to pay for this one as it is.

Thanks

I am still working on assignment 9. I have enjoyed the course, but I do have a question for you if you don't mind? Did your instructor keep in touch with you about your assignments or did you always have to contact her? Curious.

Thanks

First, the cost of the advanced course was the same as the beginning, I think it was $650 -675.  Like a lot of writers, I really couldn't pay for it all at once, so it was a $75 down payment and $50 a month.  The only thing is, you have to put the payments on a credit card and they automatically deduct it.  But it was the only way for me.

Second, what I learned:  it depends upon what you want out of the advanced course.  You can write a novel, a short chapter book or a non-fiction book.  All three genres are taught in the advanced course ( NOT the advanced magazine story course, that is separate.)  I wrote a middle-grade novel...at least, I consider it middle grade, because the characters are 13 and in 8th grade, but I guess some publishers would still call that YA.

Once you've decided upon the type of book you'll write, you start learning how to plot your story, how to write a synopsis, how to create a chapter outline ( hard for me, as I don't outline when I write), and then on to POV, characterization, emphasis on each chapter having a beginning, middle and end, what your voice is, chronology, and so on.  Some of it is what you've also learned in the first course, but with a great deal more emphasis.  You also learn how to select the publishers that will be most suitable for your book, how to revise, how to polish your manuscript, how to write a query for a full manuscript and what to do when you submit it to a publisher.

I learned a lot from my first course, but I've learned even more in this one.  It sounds like repetition, and a lot of it is, but the emphais is more definitive and directed towards producing a marketable full manuscript.

Personally, I think the advanced course has been well worth my money.  I've worked harder and longer on each section ( you get a longer period of time between assignments because you are required to do more) but it has been a great learning experience.

I hope I've answered some of your questions.

Hi Shandy,

Are you referring to assignment 9 in the beginning course or the novel course?  In each course, for every assignment I wrote a letter, asking questions, responding to critiques and comments from my instructor, and telling about any concerns I might have with the assignment or with the story/article I was writing.  In both courses, my instructors have responded with a letter in the returned assignment, but only once have I ever had to contact my instructor in between assignments.

So I guess to answer specifically your question, the contact between my instructors and me had always been a two-way street, but only at the time of sending and receiving assignments.
