Is there a place to for the various eye coloring when describing a character? I get frustrated when I am trying to describe a character's eyes and while, I am sure, in fantasy/SF it isn't too important to be actuate (sp?) I like to be in my other genres Sad

Thanks,
Jo

I like eyes so tend to be very descriptive with them.  I am a believer they are things like window's to the soul, and something that shows mood, etc.  But if you show emotions or whatever other ways I would think you could gloss over it if you don't want to describe them.  Lol or I am totally misunderstanding the question?

Yes, I agree with you on eyes being the window to the soul bit. And I always focus early to the mcs' eyes so that in future scene I can express their moods better. In one story, I have a MC who has 'emerald' green eyes. Because her name is Kathryn, everyone refers to her as Kat (cat - get it?? Tongue).
But seriously, how many ways can you describe blue, green, brown, etc. Of course, some have a mixtures of different colors and I have to take a guess at it.

I had a writing partner that used to look up synonyms for blue, green, brown, and grey. She would come up with some wonderfully uniqiue descriptions for each characters eyes. She gave me a link to two different articles that you might find interesting. I'll see if I can find them and if I do I'll post them. Smiley It's been a while so I'll have to do some searching lol.  :Smiley

OK, I tried 1.  These are the 18 I came up with for blue.  Some colors are close enough that her mood would change them from one to another.  Or the light could change them.  Any one have more for blue?

azure
cobalt
sky blue
sea color
beryl
cerulean
indigo
navy
royal
sapphire
teal
turquoise
ultramarine
baby blue
light blue
clear blue
deep blue
ocean blue

Sandy,

You miss one - Ice blue. And I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't heard it on TV a few hours ago Smiley

That would be great if you can find the links, but I understand what you're saying - once you have "filed" them, it is difficult after a period of time to find where you did "file" them  Cheesy

Who is it that can make muddy water clear? No one, but if left to stand, it will gradually become clear of itself.

That is so true Jo! I'm lucky to have a couple ideas of where I may have filed them. Smiley

Nice list Sandy! Too add one (though it similar to many) Midnight Blue. Smiley

black is onyx, cold, harsh, dark, sinsister.  I have blue eyes, but if I wear green ONE tends to turn green.  Lol needless to say I try to avoid green...

Hey, I never thought of Onyx, but then it is not used much in conversations - unless you are talking about stones. The description is good too.
LOL!! One eye turns green?  But on the other hand, my favorite color is hunter green, but I doubt I could use that as a eye color...

When this thread is done, I'm going to save it in my story file Smiley

Glad you are finding good things here Jo.  Trust me, it is weird. People drive me nuts.

"Wait.  Let me see.  Wow, did you know one of your eyes looks green?"

"Yeah, it happens when I wear green."

"Really?  That's really cool."

I can't tell you how many times I have had a converstation like that.  Lol the other one was "did someone hit you?"

That is because I have a birth mark on my eye lid above right eye.  Sometimes you can't see it.  But if I am overly tired or upset about something it looks like a bruise...

I can see how that would get annoying after a while, Sandy. My eyes are odd it's not so much that they change color but they have a large circle of blue with a thin green/yellow circle near the center of my eye.

Jo, I couldn't find the specific link I was looking for regarding eye color I believe she used a certian Thesaurus. Using google I didn't come up with the correct one. I put in blue-and it came up with the synonym sad. Not what I was looking for.

Though I found two articles she wrote about finding the 'right' name for character and body langauge related to character creation. Both are really good. I will post these in the link thread as well.

Sandy,
I agree with RC, that must be annoying. I didn't really thought about it until now.  Embarrassed

RC,
Thanks for the links to the articles. I'll check them out after I get home from work.
