I am so new at this, "sport," and I love it...
but, I am really stuck.

I am on #5 where I have to turn in 3 ideas, etc.
On all three of my ideas I cannot come up with an ending.
My endings are, "ho-hum," if I have an ending at all.
(Consequently I have had to request late submission dates  Sad )

I think I have the beginning to grab attention showing personality of my character...I have conflict and adventure in the middle...
but, satisfying type climax..I am totally stuck.
My reader on these ideas are 3 to 9 with limited story word length.

I am missing something here on my knowledge.  So I would appreciate some help, please.

Generally beginning is where the character encounters his problem/challenge/goal and faces the realization that he absolutely MUST overcome the problem/challenge or reach the goal. It's were we meet the character and his problem and find out it is IMPORTANT.

The middle is where he tries and tries but finds himself inadequate to the task of overcoming the problem/challenge or reaching the goal.

The end is where he changes his approach in some way (or changes himself) and is thus finally able to overcome the problem/challenge or reach the goal (or possible reach a more appropriate/satisfying goal than he began with because of the change in himself that occured through the struggle.

So the pattern is
begin
struggle
succeed

With a sufficiently strong NEED to meet the goal or overcome the problem, you'll automatically have a satisfying ending. SO to get the ending you need, look to the problem or goal...beef up the NEED to act...and we'll automatically have a satisfying ending when the main character finally wins.

A big thing that will make a weak ending (by the by) is if you somehow "rescue" the main character from succeeding...a "wise adult" tells the character what to do, or a "helpful adult" just solves the problem for him. That will always result in a weak, disappointing ending...so be sure the main character's action have allowed him to "earn" his success.

Thank you so much, Jan.

This was really a swim upstream for me... Huh?

But with your answer I feel I pulled it together. Smiley

Wow...absolutely loved how it started to come together for me.
As I worked thru my 3 story ideas...I referred to your steps a million times.  I know it's in our books...but it wasn't registering.

I'm a metal sculptor and 2D artist... The excitement that I get from those 2 things match the mental gymnastics of writing.

I have a new respect for what it takes to write.  So glad to be here.

I'm glad you found it helpful, SJ. Sometimes it's just hearing it from a slightly different perspective that helps the directions "get through the haze." I know it works that way for me sometimes.

Is that assignment 5 in the advanced course?  I'm also working on assignment 5 and i'm currently writing a 350 word objective description of a real life child or teenager.   I was hoping someone else would be working on the same assignment I'm not sure I have enough facial detail and was hoping someone else would read it and give me their opinion.

It's Assignment 5 in the short "Writing for Children's Magazines" course which is the shorter introductory course. You're taking the long (10 lesson) introductory course, Krystin, so your Assignment 5 is different.

Oh okay... Do you know of anyone in the same course and lesson as I am in... I could use a writing buddy today.
