April 11-13, 2012 "Writing for Parents and Families" with Karen Hammond in the Writer's Retreat
http://institutechildrenslit.net/index.php

Although the number of print magazines for children is shrinking, the number of parent/family magazines continues to grow with new regionals opening every year. Since these markets also care about children, they can make terrific supplemental markets for children's writers. Learn how to write for these hungry markets.

Karen Hammond is an award winning feature writer, essayist and poet, and author of two books including the popular travel guide, Backroads & Byways of New England: Drives, Day Trips & Weekend Excursions (Countryman Press). Her feature articles have been published in leading national and international magazines and newspapers including  American Profiles, Family Circle, Family Life,  Runner's World, The American Lawyer, Weight Watchers Magazine, Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, Woman’s Day, Yoga Journal, Arkansas Democrat Gazette, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Boston Globe, Miami Herald, Pittsburgh-Post Gazette, Vancouver Sun and many others. In addition, she has contributed poems and prose chapters to several anthologies. Karen began her career by writing brief articles for children. Today she writes primarily for the adult market in the areas of travel, food, and wine; popular culture; women’s health; parenting; and humor, as well as short fiction.

For many years Karen taught freelance magazine and newspaper writing at Binghamton University as a member of the adjunct faculty. She has been an instructor with Long Ridge for almost 19 years and is a popular speaker at writing seminars and conferences. Karen is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and earned a master’s degree at Binghamton University. Writing for Children's Magazines
http://evelynchristensen.com/mags.html
For everyone missing Kidmagwriters, good news! The wonderful Evelyn Christensen is beginning an ezine devoted to market information and help for all children's writers interested in magazines. Plus, it's another market for writing related articles: "We’re open to submissions related to the focus of the publication.  Please check out the guidelines.  This is a no-pay market, but we do provide nice publicity for our authors."

10. Good News

Nancy I. Sanders: My new book, Frederick Douglass for Kids, will be released in June. If you're a bookseller, librarian, reviewer, or media professional, now through the end of April, you can request a digital galley of Frederick Douglass for Kids from NetGalley <http://www.netgalley.com/PopupHandler.php?module=catalog&func=galleyTitleDetails&projectid=15330> .

Tammi Sauer: The chickens are back! Bawk & Roll, the sequel to Chicken Dance, can be found at stores, libraries, and barnyards near you. http://www.indiebound.org/book/9781402778377

M.C. Arvanitis: My first mid grade novel, The Legend of ELPanda Paws, is now on Amazon.com, Barnes & Nobles, and can also be downloaded from SmashWords.  The story is about  the northern elves, makers of Santa Claus's Love Bears, who become sad and cannot make the special bears. There is a terrible unhappiness in the land that causes the Negative Disease. LVina and ELMetric, ELFanites,  must find the reason for this problem.

Patricia Moore: I won an Honorable Mention for my picture book manuscript, FIELD OF FLOWERS, in the Writer's Digest Writing Competition.

Ronnie Dauber:I'm really excited because I have just published the third book, Whiteout, in my y/a action-adventure series and I'm currently writing the fourth book. But as well, I have written my first Inspirational book called, Let Faith Arise! and it should be released at the end of April. This book is especially exciting for me because it's a collection of messages that I believe were inspired by the Lord as I fought a horrific battle with cancer all of last year.
