Most of my Writer’s First Aid blog deals with problems, challenges, and disappointments writers must deal with in order to build and maintain a career. So it’s a delight when I can share good writing news! Two days ago I got the final covers for my Boarding School Mysteries (middle school age)–and I love them! Yesterday I saw the first review here and then someone from Barnes and Noble called to set up a signing. Needless to say, I was really pleased by everything. Now…I need to savor the moment and find an inexpensive way to celebrate. These moments come few and far between for writers. There are months and years of waiting and rejections for most writing projects. That makes it all the more important for us to stop and celebrate our successes.
Which I will go do now…I imagine it will include some form of chocolate.

  1. You Go Girl! Congratulations! Yes, you’re right. These moments are few and far between. The covers are great. Did you have any input or were they totally out of your hands? (Don’t you hate that?) Do go celebrate!

  2. Hi and thanks, Pat from Mt. Hermon! The ideas for the covers were created in-house. They DID ask me for my input, but I simply don’t think very visually. I came up with a few scenes from the books that they could illustrate, but they weren’t chosen. What I suggested was a bit complicated, I think. I was so pleased with how the girls look–very realistic.

  3. Absolutely make the most of it! They look really great lined up together like that. And I love the little illustrations in the boxes – they add another element to catch the eye.

  4. The little boxes were one place I had a bit of input. They are clues used in the mystery, but in one case I thought the clue was too obvious and too close to the solution. I appreciated being asked. I hope they sell so well I get to do more of them!

  7. Sometimes when I am having trouble getting back into my writing, I’ll start off by journaling for a while. At the very least, it helps me get warmed up. Sometimes, though, I start journaling about why I’m reluctant to work on my book. That will almost always lead to me journaling about my book, characters, etc. That, in turn usually leads to me to some ideas that I am then able to add to my book.

  8. Thank you for all the congratulations, everyone! It’s nice to have something to celebrate from time to time. 8-)
Booklady: I love the idea of journaling about why you’re stuck or reluctant, and then journaling about aspects of your novel…and letting that journaling turn into writing the novel. Kind of a way to prime the pump, isn’t it?
