How’s your writing life? Full of exciting new possibilities? Do you wake up, rev your writing engine, and burst into your office, fingers flexed to write?

Or has it become the “same old, same old”? If so, I’ve got an article for you this morning. In Craig Harper’s motivational “Eight Steps to Getting Out of That Rut” he described some of our lives like this: “All too often it seems like one of those baggage carousels at the airport where you feel like you’re getting somewhere for a moment, only to end up in the exact same place on a regular basis. Again and again and again.”

If that describes your writing life, read his article, and then leave me a comment. What’s your writing rut? Did you try his eight steps? How did they work for you?

  1. I really related to his bit on Change Your Attitude. While other things have been going OK for me, we are also trying to build a small house and it has been giving me bad feelings in my stomach and constant worrying – until I realised (reading Craig today) that the major problem is my attitude towards it.
If I approach it with a “I will work this out and enjoy the process” kind of attitude, it will be so much easier to deal with.
Already I can see the difference! And I bet it works with everything.

  2. Myra: I didn’t know that YOU needed this, but *I* sure did! In fact, it would be a good article for me to read about three times a day. 8-) Yes, email and the Internet are BIG areas of challenge for writers these days. I’ll have to blog about that soon!

  3. Sherryl, that is such a wise comment. I am going to do that today too about something that is aggravating me. Just saying the words out loud that “this is not so bad–in fact, I can enjoy doing this” feels powerful. At the very least, I can say with great feeling, “I will LOVE when this is done!”
